General Surgery Skills Day 2023

Summary

General Surgery Skills Day 2023 was the first skills day organised by the Barts and the London Surgical Society. The entire day was devoted to General surgery. The day started off with a welcome from Professor Arunthathi Mahendran after which we proceeded with a lecture about a career in General Surgery and career progression from Mr Ajit Abraham and Miss Charlotte Allan. Next Dr Rezaul Karim gave everyone an introduction to Laparoscopic instruments and laparoscopic surgical skills. Following a lunch break at the Shield Cafe we proceeded to the day’s workshops in three groups. Every participant had a chance to practice their suturing and knot tying skills, with the basics covered as well as the introduction of the Aberdeen knot. The participants also learned how to perform an end to end hand sewn bowel anastomosis and practice the peg and polo task using laparoscopic instruments.
